Extras for Creative Reuse

?????I recently toured Extras for Creative Reuse in Lynn with a few local municipal Recycling Coordinators. Extras for Creative Reuse is a membership based non-profit creative reuse center that has been serving greater Boston’s teachers, artists, and creative people since 1981.You can donate material that will be used in classrooms and arts programs or you can become a member and get materials to use at home, in your studio or in your classroom. Their mission is to stimulate creative learning and help children awaken their creative potential in education and play through the use of reusable, recycled, and surplus material. Extras is a clearinghouse that recovers tons of material from being burned or thrown away and redistributes it for creative educational use. For more information go to http://www.extrasforcreativereuse.org/index.html.

Extra Styrofoam Recycling Options

With the huge increase in online shopping this holiday season comes an overload of cardboard boxes and packing materials including Styrofoam. Melrose holds an annual Styrofoam recycling event in March, however, there is another recycling option if you can’t wait that long to recycle your Styrofoam. Lifoam Industries is holding a free event on January 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at their facility at 2 Fifth Street, Peabody.  Lifoam is only able to accept foam during their recycling events. Items must be clean and can not be dropped off ahead of the event or sent through the mail.  Packing peanuts are not accepted.  For a full list of acceptable items go to the ReFoamIt website. For more information about this collection, please contact Oscar at 978-278-6215.

Snow Updates Thursday Night

Snow storm updates:

  • Trash and recycling: due to the weather, trash pickup was not completed on a few streets as scheduled on Thursday. Trash will be picked up on those streets Friday. Trash pickup is on a holiday schedule with a one-day delay, so streets that are usually on a Thursday schedule will be picked up on Friday and those that have regular trash pickup on Friday will be picked up on Saturday.
  • Plowing: Melrose has and will continue to have over 80 pieces of snow removal equipment on the roads throughout the night and the morning hours. The severity and timing of the storm will still result in dangerous driving conditions in the morning commuter hours. Please avoid driving if possible.
  • Parking:  the on-street parking ban went into effect at 10 p.m. Thursday and remain in effect until 10 a.m. Friday.

The DPW Snow Operations Center at the City Yard on Tremont Street is staffed round the clock during this snow event, so all snow calls should go to them at 781-665-0142.
