School Recycling Contests Finished

Horace Mann students accepted their “2012 School Recycling Champs” for winning Mayor Dolan’s School Recycling Contest.

You might not think of recycling as a competitive activity — but in Melrose it  is.

This past school year, Melrose’s seven public schools (plus St. Mary’s  School) have been competing in two recycling contests. One was initiated by Mayor Rob Dolan in 2006 and involves the amount of  recyclables collected in each school.

The other contest is sponsored by Trex, a Virginia-based company that  manufactures decking and railing products made of recycled materials. This  contest tracked how many plastic bags were recycled by each school.
