Music, Film & Fun on Saturday, June 20

The Melrose UU Church Green Sanctuary Committee and Sustainable Melrose are hosting an evening of music, activities, fun and film on June 20 on the lawn of the Melrose Public Library starting at 6 p.m.

The evening will kick off with Grammy Award Nominee Children’s Musician Alastair Moock at 6:30 p.m. Following the music, there will be a planting activity where children will plant seedlings to grow their own food at home and the night will conclude with a showing of the film Truck Farm at dusk.

Truck Farm tells the story of a group of quirky urban farmers building a farm in the back of a pickup truck in Brooklyn, NY and using it to educate urban children by engaging them in farming, healthy eating and growing their own food. Truck Farm is a simple concept, with a big impact.

Bring your own lawn chair or blanket along with a picnic and enjoy the evening!

Mattress Recycling Event: June 20

mattress 1One of the most wasteful and expensive practices in the country is throwing used mattresses in the trash. Mattresses, which are large, bulky and costly to haul and dispose of, are typically sent to landfills or incinerators.

A growing trend is mattress recycling, in which mattresses are disassembled into useful parts that can be recycled and reused. Recognizing the many benefits of this practice, the Melrose Department of Public Works is holding its second mattress recycling event on Saturday, June 20, from 8 a.m.-noon at the DPW Operations Facility, 72 Tremont Street.

Any type of mattresses or box spring can be dropped off for free.

Up to 95 percent of mattress components – including metal, cotton and foam – are recyclable. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of mattresses are recycled annually. Melrose is among the first communities in the area to organize a mattress recycling event.

“This is an excellent opportunity to cut down on waste, reduce the amount of money we’re spending to haul these mattresses and also create recycling jobs,” says Ann Waitt, Assistant Director of Public Works. “Most people aren’t even aware that mattresses can be recycled and how much of the materials go to waste.”

“We’re hoping to get a good turnout on June 20 and start a trend here in Melrose.”
UTEC mattress recycling pictureThe mattresses and box springs collected at the event will be picked up and recycled by the Lowell-based United Teen Equality Center (UTEC), an organization that provides jobs and GED preparation classes for proven-risk youth. UTEC’s mission is to offer constructive opportunities for young people who might otherwise be involved with gangs, violence and illegal activities. For more information about UTEC’s mattress recycling program, click here to view their website.

“In addition to taking advantage of this new recycling option, you’ll be supporting a great youth program, the UTEC,” adds Waitt.

Also on June 20, DPW will be accepting the usual items that are collected at all events (besides Swap Day) include: CRT’s including televisions, monitors and lap tops ($10-$15), electronics, CFL bulbs, books, clothes, tires ($2-$8), mercury items, dried latex paint and metal goods ($20). Recycling Center stickers and recycling label stickers will be available.

13th Annual DPW Day: June 11

20130530_104100The 13th Annual DPW Day will be held on June 11th (rain date of June 12th) from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the DPW Operations Facility, 72 Tremont Street. The DPW is hard at work preparing this fun and educational day for the children and residents of Melrose. Our theme this year is Learn Today, Lead Tomorrow!

DPW Day includes environmental themed presentations from a select group of 4th grade students, demonstrations of tasks in DPW, exhibitors including engineering, water, trash and recycling, fun games and much more. Students in grades K-3 of the Melrose schools will attend the event as a field trip, and Melrose residents are also invited to bring their children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, ages 8 or younger, to join in the event.

Because of the large number of children attending, Tremont Street will be closed and the DPW Recycling Center will be closed to residents dropping off yard waste and recyclables that day.

For more information, call the DPW at 781-665-0142.
