Fee Changes Effective July 1st

Effective Friday, July 1st the following fee changes will be implemented for recycled goods and services offered by DPW:

$20 for ANY TV or computer monitor*

$25 for any Curbside Pickup of a metal item, TV, recliner or sleeper sofa (which must be pre-arranged by purchasing a sticker at City Hall or DPW Operations Facility and Recycling Center)

* We made the decision to increase this pricing due to costs the city and its taxpayers were absorbing due to rate hikes and challenging market conditions for recycled glass (especially CRT glass).

If you have any questions please call 781-665-0142 or email

Household Hazardous Waste Day in Stoneham Sat. June 25th

On Saturday, June 25th, the town of Stoneham and the City of Melrose are partnering for a joint Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. The event will be held at Stoneham High School at 149 Franklin Street. From 9 a.m.-1 p.m., you can drop off toxic household items that are not allowed in the trash. Proof of residency is required.   Fees will primarily determined by actual estimated total volume of hazardous waste not volume of containers themselves according to the following fee list:

1-3 gal.    $ 20

4-10 gal.    $ 30

11-25 gal.     $ 50

Commercial hazardous waste will not be accepted.

Since the improper disposal of hazardous waste is dangerous for Department of Public Works employees and harmful to the environment, we encourage you to take advantage of this important event.

Event flier below. (Please note that Melrose residents should bring dried latex paint (free), tires ($2-8) and propane tanks (free) to the City Yard at 72 Tremont Street during regular hours of operation rather than to Stoneham on this hazardous waste day.) Call 781-665-0142 for details.

Mattress Recycling on June 18

Melrose DPW is holding its third mattress recycling event on June 18th from 8 a.m. to noon at 72 Tremont Street. Any type of mattresses or box spring can be dropped off for free.

The mattresses and box springs collected at the event will be picked up and recycled by the Lowell-based United Teen Equality Center (UTEC), an organization that provides jobs and GED preparation classes for proven-risk youth in Lowell and Lawrence.

As stated on their website, UTEC’s mission and promise is “to ignite and nurture the ambition of our most disconnected youth to trade violence and poverty for social and economic success”.

For more information about UTEC click here to view their website.
